We’re diving deeper into our ongoing journey towards culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP)! We’ve explored this framework’s heart (volition) and left brain (critical consciousness). Now, let’s shift to the right brain – cultural competence.

Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings defines cultural competence as the ability of students to:
- Appreciate and celebrate their own cultures
- Gain knowledge and fluency in at least one other culture
These abilities translate to students expressing their cultural identity through language, interaction styles, and pride in their heritage. However, Dr. Ladson-Billings emphasizes that cultural integrity and academic success go hand-in-hand.
So, how do we foster cultural competence in both teachers and students?
Culturally Competent Teachers:
- Affirming Beliefs: These educators respect and value their students’ diverse backgrounds, thinking styles, and learning approaches. They understand their attitudes directly impact interactions and expectations.
- Knowing Their Students: Culturally competent teachers actively learn about their students and their communities, recognizing that cultures constantly evolve. They then leverage this knowledge to design engaging learning experiences that celebrate all cultures.
- High Expectations: While fostering cultural pride, these teachers set rigorous academic goals, empowering students to achieve them. They prepare them to be informed decision-makers who contribute positively to their communities.
Developing Cultural Competence (Everyone):
Cultural competence is a lifelong journey! We can all cultivate:
- Affirming Beliefs: Hold positive and respectful views about ourselves and others.
- Lifelong Learning: Continuously explore different cultures, ways of thinking, and knowing.
The Takeaway:
Culturally competent teachers are crucial for fostering the same in their students. By valuing diverse perspectives and creating inclusive learning environments, we can bridge cultural divides and empower all students to thrive.
